Snow in Texas - we had a similar issue last week... something about when the temps change quickly, the water temp is affected. Did you try turning the water all the way up on your boiler? I had a guy come out and charge me $60 to turn up a dial!

Good morning!!! Hope you all are warm and cozy somewhere indoors today. I am enjoying a quiet moment with my coffee and catching up on some posts!

No haven't tried that yet, but I have been thinking about it, thanks.

Good morning all! Just an update, still two houses in the neighborhood with their Christmas lights lit. Could be because there are still 2+ feet of snow on the ground so they can't be taken down, but who cares its still nice to see!

Good Morning, Friends of Everything Christmas!

Straight ahead to the count without delay:
Days to the Season: 283
Days to Christmas Day: 325
Only 9 days until Feb 12, the one quarter mark to Christmas Season 2011!
(And that's the same as SINGLE DIGITS, Yogi)
Wow! So close to such a big Milestone already! We're moving right along, aren't we?

Well, the warm weather was short-lived and we are back down into the mid-30's here this morning. Rain predicted, too.
Oh, well. After all, it's still winter.
(But there's just something psychologically positive about getting past January, isn't there?)

Well, we are over the hump-of-the-week and coasting downhill.
Tomorrow is Weekend Eve, Guys!
And with that thought, you have a Thrilling Thursday, Everyone!

Allright!
If you are one of those who are wondering about Carl and The Shispering Pines, stay tuned.

Good Morning Everyone!!!!!!! It is cold here this morning but at least we aren't getting any snow or ice. Mom went to work but only stayed for 2 hours. She is starting to come down with the same stomach bug that I had last week. My plan for today is to get caught up on launrdy and maybe make some chocolate chip muffins. I hope every one has a GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!

OK.
I'll try to review the history of some of the more -- well -- interesting characters and places mentioned here in our countdown thread.

First, of course, there is Carl.
Ah, Carl! Our 3-humped Coffee Camel.
Born about 5 years ago over at Christmas.com, he came about as part of the long-running interplay between Binger and myself in regards to coffee vs sleep.
(Carl's third hump stored the finest blend of coffee which der Bingster coveted.)

Originally, Carl lived with me and was a frequent over-the-shoulder commentator when I posted the daily count.
After a time, he began staying with willing thread contributors who agreed to be his host for short visits. After each visit, his antics were duly reported by the host for all to read and enjoy.

Over time, the humor wore a bit thin so Carl was mentioned less frequently. Eventually, he was dropped from the thread for several months until one of our members (Auntie perhaps?) inquired as to his whereabouts. At that point, it was revealed that Carl, owing to his unique ability to talk, had been offered an undercover position with the military on a secret spy mission in Saudi Arabia.
On his release and return, he accepted the position of activities director at the Shispering Pines where he remains to this day.

Carl's personality traits: He's fun-loving, talkative, experimental (primarily with coffee blends of a questionable nature) and -- yes -- a bit vain to the point of narcissism.
But under it all, he has a heart of gold and a guaranteed position at the 'Pines owing to his unique talents (and the fact the resort's business has tripled ever since his arrival).

That, of course, brings us to the 'Pines. The Shispering Pines, that is.
Name-christened by our own Jayish after a typo which was supposed to read "Whispering Pines", our thread-resident resort eventually took on a "Holiday Inn" (meaning the 1942 movie) like flavor, especially after Carl's arrival and his tremendous love for Christmas in general and that movie in particular.
Each Wednesday is open house day, where the first glass of sweet southern iced tea is complimentary along with the first Fired Twinkie.

Which in turn brings us to Fired Twinkies. That's right - FIRED Twinkes as (opposed to "fried").
Again, a typo was to blame. (Believe it was Binger this time.)
But our unique thread treat has endured, especially after becoming the official confection at the Shispering Pines.

Well, there you have it, folks. A thumbnail sketch of an explanation as to what has been going on here.

Bear in mind that Carl, the 'Pines and fired twinkies all came about in simpler, less crowded and less complicated times when we were few, everybody knew everybody and what was going on with all the in-jokes.
Do they have a place here at MMC as we get more crowded, sophisticated and free-wheeling?
I guess time will tell!

Sorry I missed getting back to you on pipe thing had a phone call. I was going to see if I could think of anything to help you get them running.

No worries! We are still dealing with it but probably wait until things thaw out before tackling the problem.

Christmas A Holic...what's it like there right now? I bet it's getting pretty crazy. I would love to be there.
Not sure if you are talking about weather or Super Bowl. We have both going on and it is insane! The media coverage on our local news is crazy regarding the Super Bowl. I didn't realize how much went into a Super Bowl until it came here.

I hope your mom gets well soon!

I'm happy to meet Carl and would enjoy hearing about what he's up to these days! Thanks for the background. I don't drink coffee, but maybe I could come by for a cup of tea (when it isn't snowing) and sample a fired Twinkie. Thank you, Crown, for bringing us relative newcomers up to date!

(I had assumed that Wednesday was Carl/Shispering Pines day because it's "hump day" and a camel has humps. Was I right?)

As for whether they have a place here---they were born here, so they belong here. They're part of the Countdown tradition. Christmas nuts don't let traditions die.

Love it Crown! I have been curious for sometime and figured it was a lot of inside jokes going on.

It's a pleasure to get to know Carl better. He sounds really cool!

Good morning all. Well now we have no hot water at all in the entire house. We have water, but it isn't getting hot. I am no expert, but it seems to me that if our pipes were frozen there wouldn't be any water at all, why would it only effect hot water? I admit I don't know about this stuff, I never had to deal with anything like this before. Anybody have any ideas?

If you have had a lot of wind it may have blown the pilot light out on the hot water heater that is if you have a gas one.

Good Thursday morning, my Christmas friends!

What happened to my wonderful weather??!?!? Yesterday it was sunny and 74, now it's cloudy and 47. Grrrr. Crown, Gabulldawg and I usually endure the same weather patterns. Sorry to say, guys, but it's going to rain and be cold for a few days. Well, I just had more gas put in my tank for the gas logs, so bring it on!

I hope you all have a great day! cheesy

That's a great way to start your day. I am doing the same except I will leave for work before 8 a.m. Have a great rest of the day.

Good morning!!! Hope you all are warm and cozy somewhere indoors today. I am enjoying a quiet moment with my coffee and catching up on some posts!

Well a nice crisp -12 this morning but all is well so far. Water all runs the sun is shining and they say we will warm up to maybe 32 next couple of days before we plunge back into the real cold again. Waiting for it to warm up a little before heading out to do a little snow clean up work on the drives, parking lots and streets. Want to try and get storm drains opened up a bit in case some melting takes place it has somewhere to go. Stay warm all and will talk to you later.

Good morning, Christmas friends. We have some white stuff here in northern California. Of course it's called frost and not snow. The sun is out so I know the temps will rise later in the day. By the end of each day, I don't even need a coat. Oh well, that's what I get from moving to California when I didn't realize the weather here! I hope everyone has a great day.

Did you find any good ones?
I always try to find a good deal on a bubble light centerpiece its kind of kitschy but I like it and would be very unique to have one.

I LOVE KITSCH !!!! I didnt see any bubble light center pieces but thank you for the idea becuse right now Im going to go and look. !
