I got on Ebay over 20 years ago when the prices were still reasonable. Now it's crazy expensive.

Some good place to find retro decorations are local Facebook buy/sell pages.

The reason I ask is because I think I want to take some classes...get to know some contacts who could mentor

Biggest thing with online is you need to know what you're looking for. Even honest sellers may not know what they have and describe it wrong. Also even if the wiring is bad, the bulbs can be put in modern string. Don't throw out an old string because of bad wiring. You can get new strings for the bulbs.
