All this talk about food is making me hungry.

All this talk about food is making me hungry.

I am starving. DH just said about dinner a few minutes ago. We're trying to decide what to have. It's such a struggle some nights what to decide on!

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and I have always grown up eating pork and sauerkraut for my dinner on New Years Day. My grandma always said that it was what she ate on New Years Day growing up, so she continued the tradition with her family. My mom now does it and I can't imagine having a New Years without it! Eating this meal is supposed to bring you good luck for the upcoming year.

A lot of people hate sauerkraut because it is so bitter. The trick (if anyone wants to try it) is to dump the sauerkraut out of the can/bag into a strainer, rinse it with cold water, shake that out, rinse it again a few more times. That takes the horrible bitterness out of it and it actually tastes really good.

We usually cook it on the stove with the pork and also some hot dogs, but a crock pot works really well, too!

I think this originated from the Pennsylvania Dutch.

Edit -- Here is what the PA Dutch supposedly thought about it - "Pennsylvania Dutch superstition says that eating pork brings good luck because a pig roots forward to look for its food, while chickens scratch backward and cows stand still."

Since my mom's family is all from PA this is what we have. I won't touch the sauerkraut though.

Well I'm off to eat dinner and then I'll be back to try and catch up some.

I used to be like that until 2 years or so ago. Have you ever tried putting sugar on it? My mom swears by it and says it makes it not sour anymore!

It was a little warm today. I took my grandsons outside to ride their bikes. They had a jacket on but ended up taking it off. Some people were wearing shorts and t-shirts. I don't think it was quite warm enough for shorts for myself but there were many out today with them on. It will be getting up to 70 degrees this week. I can't wait for the temps to drop again!

We are getting pizza and wings for dinner...mmm! One of my favorites!

How did you do that???? cheesy

I will probably catch up next year! Hmm... that's just a few days from now.

I have an Iphone, plus DH got me a Nook tablet for Christmas, so I am able to update from more than just the house now. I've been logging on to MMC lots of places now. I take you guys with me everywhere I go. I love it! :)

Comming to you from Dundas Square, downtown Toronto. I llove my new phone! I can now visit here from almost anywhere. Right now Laura is looking up address of where we need to be.

I love that too - it's so great to be able to log onto MMC or anything else I want to, anytime, anywhere! cheesy

I've never tried that. Maybe I'll make a small batch like that this year.

Yea, she just throws some sugar on top to eat hers and loves it then. I never used to like the taste either, but somehow have come used to the taste. Try it and let me know if you like it or not!

Did she seem to like it? I told DH that it what I would like to do for our daughter next year - get EA a doll and then in the future take her to the store in New York City. I've heard it is so much. Did you guys eat in the cafe or anything?
She LOVED the store! She and her mother spent hours in there! Of course, she loves her American Girl doll (the doll's name is Olivia), and she's constantly changing her clothes, fixing her hair, making a bed for her, or teaching school to her.

We didn't eat in the bistro, but there were many who did. I was holding out for The Cheesecake Factory!

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a great evening! Just got done eating dinner and cleaning up from that. Cleaned up a little from that too.

DH is downstairs with EA - she is playing in her jump house that my inlaws got her for Christmas. She loves it. Our basement is currently unfinished - we're going to start finishing it this winter or spring and all of her big toys (bike, motorized cars, jump house, etc. is downstairs.) I am not sure where we will put all of that once it is finished, but I guess we will find somewhere! It will obviously take a while to do!

Well, I hope you're all having a great evening. I soon have to go lay down and attempt to take a nap. Hope I can. Gotta work at 11p. Talk to you all tomorrow! Good night!

Aww...that's great. I am so glad she had a great time. I can't wait to take her there someday. She has the babydoll (it's called the Bity Babydoll) version right now of the American Girl doll and like I said, I think next year we are going to buy her an American Girl. I just think this year yet she was just too young for all the stuff that went with it.

I've never been to a Cheesecake Factory - they have one in Pittsburgh - next time I go I would love to try one. I've some of their cheesecake before and loved it!

oh, star that's great! thanks for the update. you a mess girl!!

Oh, and I forgot to say that my family eats pickled herring on New Year's Eve for good luck. I'm not sure why-maybe because it's so nasty that nothing else worse can happen to you all year!
yuck, you got that right girlfriend!
Drive east---there's one in Natick and one in Framingham! Too darn convenient ... they know us by sight when we walk in ...

First time we went, we each ordered fries, if you can picture that! Big mistake! (For the uninitiated, an order of fries fills a brown paper lunch bag.) Good burgers. And the one nearest us just got the new touch-screen soda machines.
omg 5 guys is fab! ya' know this past summer after my daughter (& i do mean immediately after) got her wisdom teeth SURGICALLY removed she wanted to go to 5 guys....still can't believe that. but those fries...oh man!

Yes, I did get your message, but I was unable to reply to it yesterday because I was busy - I apologize. I've missed you!
