When I was a teenager, I loved to do that: sit in the den with only the Christmas lights on and a stack of records on the record player. You do know what a record player is, don't you?

Records are what people use for coasters and bowls now, right? cheesy

We know a woman who takes old vinyl records and turns them into cool looking chip/snack bowls. That might be a scary thought to you RJD. cheesy

I LOVE these ideas!

...

This one did come and go too fast. But instead of doing it over, let's start on the next one NOW. We can do that---we're MMC!

Sure! Or we can wander around the neighborhood looking at the lights while singing carols, just to confuse the neighbors!

almost everyone in the neighbourhood had turned off their Christmas lights so I put more up and made sure they are all on!
Can I come along to sing carols too?

Uhh, yeah right!

Scary indeed when folks don't know the value of the vinyl they are repurposing!

Granted, most vinyl found at thrift stores, etc, isn't worth much if anything above the purchase price. However, I did see a photo once of a multi tiered candy dish (?) that someone made from 33 1/3 records and the top record was worth around fifty bucks to record collectors! Seems like I posted that somewhere.

Found it!

Record_detail.gif

That top record may be worth $25.00 to $50.00.

That bottom record isn't that nice! (There is a YouTube of it but don't click on it if you are offended by fowl language; comment section not lyrics.)

Good evening! I just wanted to drop in & say "hello"! We are having a few quiet hours at home! It has been a crazy stretch of running & parties - my recliner felt pretty good. I am starting to hear people talking about taking down Christmas decorations & it's making me sad!! I'm not ready! Mine will stay up for awhile yet.
I hope you are all enjoying the "Between The Holidays" time! We have no plans for NYE but tomorrow night we are going to a dinner/auction where our neighbor who pitches for the San Diego Padres will be the featured speaker. We have a reserved table of 8 with neighbors. It should be a good time!
I hope everyone is doing well!

:whisper:

I hope the Padres will be a better team this year, they are my favorite NL team going back to the days of Tony Gwynn. Who is your neighbor if you don't mind me asking? Enjoy your quiet time.

wow, I spent the entire day on and off here and finally read through all the posts! It is so nice to see so many chatting here.
Only a few days left in the year and then we get start fresh again!

It has been snowing lightly all day, not much accumulation, but it looks nice! Will take some pictures in the morning to show you.

Hey everyone! Just coming to check in and see what's new. Hope you all had a good day!

I am not feeling too hot tonight. I'm really tired and my stomach is bothering me. Hopefully it goes away ASAP because I really want to enjoy NYE this year and it is only two days away.

I will check in with you all later on or in the morning!!

No need to worry about that, her husband is a big record collector/dealer.

Xmas Tidings,
I have printed out your post and want to mull it over and get back to you. We are going out of town for a few hours, but I will respond. I might not have an answer per se, but I will have questions, thoughts, musings, etc. that might help you think and make a decision. I won't say do this or do that, but I will try to get some ideas to present.
Thank You!

You've certainly got a dilemma on your hands. We're in sort-of the same boat with Nancy's oldest sister's daughter. She's not living with us, another long story, but we're helping our niece, much to the chagrin of Nancy's mean-spirited, alcoholic sister.

Yours is not an easy situation, but I salute your willingness to help this poor boy. I'd probably support the military entrance idea. It doesn't sound like the mother and step-father are planning to be much help. Good luck!
Thanks Brad, This has me doing alot of soul searching!

I'm going to go with Bradmac and say support the Military option. In the meantime though, I would say have him try it out at home for maybe a couple of days a week to see how it goes. If it works out then he could keep increasing the days he stays there.
Thank you Made, It's a good idea!

I would just let him stay with you for a little while and maybe just encourage the military thing if he is very passionate about going back. Here is my reasoning:

1. I am 21 years old and I still consider myself as a child. I live with my parents, I listen to what they tell me to do, and I am clearly not ready to be on my own yet. If he is only 18, he is in the same boat that I am in there. I still consider him as a kid that needs to rely on other people.
I agree!

2. He obviously has no job nor finances. If he doesn't have you, he doesn't have anyone. He'll be out on the streets or hopping from friend's house to friend's house and that is no way to live. That is very unstable. I know you shouldn't be responsible for that, but it's the way it is. Again, you are right on. This is correct and you are right that we shouldn't have to do this but we do it because we care and the last thing I want to be is another person in his life that doesn't want him...

3. His mother and stepfather sound extremely strict, to the point of almost mistreating him. I don't have children, but I know for a fact that I would never tell them that they are only allowed in certain portion of the home. That is just crazy. And seriously, paying for his own groceries? That just seems wrong to me unless the kid would have been in his upper twenties and is making his own living, paying rent, and can pay them for the groceries. He obviously has no income, so how is he supposed to magically get this money? That is almost encouraging him to steal or get himself into trouble by them asking for him to pay for things with money he doesn't have. I agree again with you! As I was told by his mother, he would be not a family member, not a guest, but a renter... that would have to work his way his way back into being a family member again! But, he has only 7 months to do it regardless and then they are telling him to leave again! "WHAT!!!"

4. You obviously had a huge impact on this boy. If I had a problem with someone's parent, I honestly don't think I would even remember to go apologize to them years later. Obviously your attitude towards him really made him learn the true meaning of respect and I truly think it sounds like he matured a lot because of you.

I am young myself and I know this may be of no value to you, but I really feel bad for this boy. When I was in high school, many of the people that I knew had the same sort of relationships with their parents and stayed with friends on and off. Now while I am in college, these kids are doing nothing with their lives or got themselves in a lot of trouble. I know it isn't your responsibility, but it sounds like he needs a good role model and that he really took to you. As long as he isn't causing any problems in your home, I would just say to let him stay with you. Instead of taking the route of impossibly charging him money, just ask him to help around the house and contribute like I am sure your kids do. Then hopefully in a few months he will be feeling better and going back into the military. Then he can be independent and won't have to rely on you any longer. If he decides not to go back into the military, then you might have to nudge him to get a job and go on his own.

Hope this helps, it's only my opinion.
For your age, I hear alot of maturity in your words....You sound like a truely wonderful person; thank you! And I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about this. I like the way you think, for your words ring true in my mind and my heart. For good or worse, I am now in the thick middle part of this and I am soul searching.... see my update below.....

good for you for being willing to help. It certainly is a complicated issue especially with his mom and step dad not wanting to help. I agree with others who support him joing the miltary.
Go with your heart on this one.
Thank you very much, I agree with you!

Xmas Tidings,
My heart goes out to you and to this young man. As a mom, I would say take him in, with a caveat: Lay down the "ground rules" that you and your kids already observe. Let him know how you and your wife run your household, what is expected of each family member, and the behavior and consequences that each is to abide by. Lay it ALL out. Ask him if he is willing to abide by and be held accountable to those expectations. Before you do this, however, think of all the pros and cons--do your own pros and cons and ask him for his pros and cons. I do this A LOT in my classroom (third grade) when we try to make diplomatic decisions.

If I had to make a decision such as this, I would think, "What if this were MY child. What would I want for him?" This is what I think all the time...

I am sure you will do the right thing--the thing that is right for you AND for HIM! But only you and he know what that is. Working together, however, I think you will come to a decision that is the best for both of you. Let your conscience AND your heart guide you.

Please keep us informed. We honestly care.
Thank you Seawaters, from the bottom of my heart!

Thankyou Seawaters, Christmasstar, Jennifer91, Made582 and Bradmac, for all of your thoughts and kind words of wisdom. I need all the help I can get at the moment to help assist and guide me so that I can find myself within myself, for at the moment I am lost in the battle between my feelings and my brain....

As an update:

I had plans today to be at my grandfathers all afternoon, but I started talking with Austin and ended up talking with him and my son for over 4 hours, just us guys.... In our conversation, I asked him, straight forward, "Do you really want to go back home?" he said NO! He wishes to stay with us..... He said he feels like if he goes back home, that they are setting him up for failure and that they would end up asking him to leave again!

I told him that I feel that his only chance at this time is to try to go back into the military (A non constant marching branch where he can earn some money, have a roof over his head, 3 squares a day, clothes, travel and also have a chance to learn a job skill and go back to school).

I have not seen any moves at all from his family, to contact him in a way that tells me or shows me that they really want him back. He said he texted his mother about visiting them, but she has not returned his text messages? I do not know what to believe anymore so tomorrow I am calling the mother again to see if I can speak with them again... In the mean time, my son gave Austin a phone number to a recruiter, we will start looking for some local job somewheres (don't know how this will work out, because he does not drive) and we will start looking into of getting his drivers license...

I'm starting to feel as though my family has been adopted...he told my wife today, that he thinks that I talk to him like a father figure and that I am honest in my words whenever I talk to him, even if they are the painful truths at time....

No need to worry about that, her husband is a big record collector/dealer.

Good! I've got a Jim Nabors record for her, not him, then!

Good evening,

We had a great day at my grandparents Christmas celebration, there was 4 generations of my family there. It was so nice to see everyone. The drive home was treacherous the snow started coming down around 3, and when we left there was 5-6 inches on the ground so we took the long way around instead of going over the mountain. I love seeing my grandparents Christmas decorations, there is so much history in the decorations and ornaments, the ornaments she hand painted, and of course her huge Santa Claus collection. LC loved the ornaments, he is so much like me when it comes to Christmas, I walked him around pointing out some of the ornaments and he had to touch them and he was in awe.

I will be shoveling out tomorrow.

Have a great night!!!

So funny, RJD!

As a child I was inoculated with a phonograph needle. Plus, growing up I was exposed to high levels of AM static, FM modulation, and all manner of tape hiss.

The warmth of analog flows deeply in my veins! The stark sterility of digital is for sissies!
