I don't know what the laws are in Canada, but in the U.S., if you're an "employee at will" (I think was the term), not under a contract with specific terms, either the employer or the employee can quit with no reason required. I know this because Mr. was terminated some years ago for a health issue that required a couple months' recuperation, during which he couldn't do the work he was hired for. So they dumped him. We were going to take the employer to court until our lawyer explained the facts to us. It was a tough time.
This is slightly off-topic, but it still makes me seethe. When I was diagnosed with cancer in the 1980s, I had to immediately undergo a week's worth of tests at various medical centers to "stage" the cancer so doctors could plan its treatment, so I was away from the office for that workweek. When I got back, my boss's boss sat me down and said, "You know, we could terminate you for being absent more than three days without prior approval." I HAD notified them where I was and why. They didn't terminate me, but I was aghast at their tactlessness when I was still struggling with the diagnosis of a life-threatening disease. And they made me use vacation time for chemo days.
