Good Morning Folks! Here is how Holly brines the turkey, if anyone wants to try it:

In 1 1/2 gallons of water, add:
1 1/2 cup of Kosher Salt
3/4 cup of Sugar
2 cups liquid smoke

Make sure the turkey sits at least 24 hours in the brine!

Here is the Cheater No-Salt Dry Rub:
1/4 cup paprika
1/4 cup black pepper
2 tbls garlic powder
2 tbls onion powder

And when it's time to put on the turkey and bake in the oven:

2 - 3 tbls Cheater Dry Rub
Dried Oregano
Dried Sage
Marjoram
Thyme
3 celery stalks chopped
1 onion (in wedges)
1 stick of butter
2 tbls All Purpose Flower

And then you just bake as appropriate for the weight of the turkey! You can still stuff it with whatever you like. Sometimes we have even stuffed Apples in there for flavor, you get sort of a smoky / sweet taste!

I hope all enjoys! Man I'm starving just thinking of this today!
Your Cheaters Rub is a basic Texas Brisket rub I have used forever. Its actuallly the base for almost every rub going.

I'm a strong B on this one but I'm leaning a little toward a D also. It would be nice to have a mini celebration, but I'm not sure if it would take away from the big one. I heard someone on TV yesterday talking about how they LOVE stuffing/dressing but only eat it once a year. They said, "It's so good, why don't we eat throughout the year? Maybe eating it once a year is what makes it special". And I agree. I'm a solid B now on this one.

DAYS TILL THANKSGIVING: 8

Happy 2nd Half Of November! Today folks we have 8 days remaining until Thanksgiving. Our next milestone is in a week and a day from now. Uh it’s not just the NEXT milestone it’s the FINAL MILESTONE and the ULTIMATE GOAL which is Thanksgiving. I know. It’s really coming folks. But luckily we have a week + to continue. As we continue through our Awesome Autumn I have an interesting poll for you, as always on this Wednesday!

If you could create a 2nd Thanksgiving celebration in May (having 2 a year instead of 1) would you do it or leave it as is and keep only 1 in November?
  • Yes, of course!
  • No, it wouldn’t feel the same having it in May and dilutes the specialness of it being once a year!
  • I wish I could have more than 2 Thanksgiving a year!
  • Yes, but I would want it to be a “Mini Thanksgiving” not a full replica of the real Thanksgiving!
  • My first instinct was to pick B even though you’d think I’d pick any answer with YES in it. But I really do feel part of it being special is the time of year it is and how it’s only once a year. I’ll stick with that but I’m not opposed to D also. If we did a replica of it but not fully (i.e. no football, maybe not a full dinner but half dinner). Just my feeling on it. What about you? Have a great 2nd Half Of November!
I was leaning towards B also, but I think D is my answer. For the past couple of years we've done a Halfsgiving in May, and it's maybe 1/4 the food of a real Thanksgiving meal. It's fun and doesn't take away from the specialness of the real thing at all; just a nice halfway celebration!

I would go B too. I love and appreciate that Thanksgiving is once a year. It makes it special.

I feel a second one in may would dilute the fun holiday of Memorial Day/weekend. Although the Ber holidays are the best the offseason Holidays are great in there own way too. I like to believe everything has its time and place.

I think I'd stick with one Thanksgiving. I have Easter in March or April and some birthdays during the Summer. I try to make each one special. I usually have an Easter ham and a turkey with all the sides so it's like Thanksgiving only a celebration of Easter.

I usually cook fish and seafood on birthdays I celebrate. Of course there are too many desserts to list.

I remember reading many years ago about the guy who dressed up as santa and celebrated Christmas every day for months (maybe years) without missing a day? Tree up and lit, open presents, Christmas music etc...and how that took away from it being special. I think I could do the mini celebration with a little replay of the parade and a smaller (half) Thanksgiving dinner. I think that would be good enough if I did it!

That's the great thing about liking all different times of year (even if The Bers or the holiday season is your favorite) is you often have another fun holiday coming soon that you like!

DAYS TILL THANKSGIVING: 7

Happy Week Till Thanksgiving! Today folks we have 7 days remaining until Thanksgiving (hence the opening sentence). And that is our final countdown as in 1 week from now we’ll reach our final milestone (our destination) which is Thanksgiving. 51 weeks down and 1 to go until the big day. I can’t believe it folks but with our newest (and most popular) weekly segment let’s do our final “Thanksgiving Thought Thursday” before the big day arrives next week!

The most consistent holiday/season I’ve loved throughout my life is Halloween. But of course, I’m a big Christmas Crazy like everyone on this site. But the one day that over the past 10-15 years that increased the most for me is Thanksgiving. It’s one reason why I started this thread a few years ago. I realized year after year how Thanksgiving felt like the most perfect day of the year to me and I realized it really was the best day of the year.

I’m wondering how long/when you started loving Thanksgiving so much. We all go through our phases and I thought it’d be interesting to see when everyone got on board with Thanksgiving being absolutely amazing, not talked about enough, and superb. Let me know your thoughts on Thanksgiving Thought Thursday. Have a great Week Till Thanksgiving!

I think it was maybe four or five years back when I realized that I just wasn't putting enough stock in Thanksgiving. Sure, it's easy to overlook by some people because it's right in the middle of "The Big 3", holiday season, but Thanksgiving over the past few years has really grew on me. All through growing up, I always enjoyed Thanksgiving but I never really remember counting down to it like we do now. This thread has helped me in that regards. It keeps everything exciting and always on my mind.

Have a great day! Just one week away now!

I remember loving Thanksgiving as a kid. Mostly because it kicked off the Christmas season. But I also remember all the big get-togethers with family. I loved those so much. That's the really sad part about living 750 miles from my family. You can't attend every family function. I also remember watching the parade and eating all that delicious food. My love for Thanksgiving increased a lot 21 years ago when we moved to Georgia and it was just us and the kids. I started appreciating the holiday more and wanted to make sure my kids had memories of a tradition just like I did. They're all at that in between age now of being a kid and having a family. I just hope in a few years they'll start yearning for that tradition again as I did.
