(I've mentioned this before, so forgive me if I repeat ...)

We had a non-traditional Thanksgiving, but I have really fond memories of it. That was the day of the year that my parents baked fruitcakes for Christmas. I'm talking about fruitcakes that friends and neighbors actually liked and begged for! Some friends would get half a cake every year. My parents would mix a big batch of batter in a big roasting pan and be baking cakes all morning. The cakes would be wrapped in foil and refrigerated for a few weeks until just before Christmas, when they were given out. My parents would send me next door to the grandparents while they were baking to keep me from being underfoot. My grandparents had a color TV and would be watching the Macy's Parade. Great memories! After the parade, my grandmother would give me lunch and send me home.

So we never had a family turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, because the oven was busy with fruitcakes. We'd often have a frozen turkey breast for dinner, or even turkey TV dinners! My grandmother and aunt would fix a big Thanksgiving dinner the Sunday before at my grandparents' house: my grandparents, my parents, me and my brother, my aunt and uncle, and their son.

This is what Thanksgiving was when I was little, and I loved it.
I love people who have a passion! What a wonderful tradition. I can only imagine the planning, prep, shopping, process! I have a friend who makes homemade chocolate Turtles with her mother every year, something like 600 of them between Thanksgiving and mid-December and their enjoyment and enthusiasm for it is breath-taking!

The funny thing is, I never tasted their fruitcake. I asked once, and Mom said, “You wouldn’t like it.” So I never tried it. I have the recipe, though.

That is something! I would have guessed it was a staple of your Christmas Eve or Christmas morning menu.
I bet it would be a pretty pricey gift these days.

I always found that it was either a good fruit cake or it was trash. Nothing in between. Today it would cost a small fortune to make very many. My grandma made them but they were loaded down with booze. I dont remember ever seeing one go bad either.

Lol..I am parked right next to one of those big names and he is a bum. Always sneaking around trying to find a secret..lol..he is a great guy really but have no doubt I will dump him if its between the 2 of us..lol.
Good luck and Godspeed, my friend. Give 'em heck!

DAYS TILL THANKSGIVING: 316
DAYS TILL NOVEMBER: 291
DAYS TILL THE BERS: 230

Happy January Mid-Week! Today folks we move along and see that we have 316 days remaining until Thanksgiving, 291 days left until November and 230 days to go until The Bers. We move along in our Winter Wonderland with our next milestone arriving 1 week from Thursday. It will be Tom Turkey Day #2. Exciting stuff ahead. But right now, we have our Weekly Wednesday Poll below which is also exciting to me!

Which month do you like more – January or February?

A.) I dislike both.
B.) I like January more.
C.) I like February more.
D.) I like both.

I’m going to say B. I know that I always say January is my least favorite month. But I think that I find more things in January than February. Christmas lights and NFL Playoffs. February doesn’t have as much to me but it’s at least heading later in the winter which makes me happy than being in the depths of January Cold. Have a great January Mid-Week!

My vote is B! Even though January 2026 hasn't been horrible so far, I can't reliably say that "every year" will be this case. February is reliably tried and true. Short enough and it has you wishing for "The month of Hope" and an early Spring prediction. Definitely a better month!

I think my parents' recipe called for a couple ounces of homemade wine in each cake---they weren't very boozy.

They did have plenty of candied fruit, chopped nuts, citron, currants, and so forth, with some of the fruit on top for decoration (and a bit of egg white, which came out looking like morning frost).

They didn't make wholesale amounts, as a recall. Maybe three or four cakes, but baked in springform pans, so they were fairly large instead of being little loaves, like you see in catalogues.
