I love people who have a passion! What a wonderful tradition. I can only imagine the planning, prep, shopping, process! I have a friend who makes homemade chocolate Turtles with her mother every year, something like 600 of them between Thanksgiving and mid-December and their enjoyment and enthusiasm for it is breath-taking!(I've mentioned this before, so forgive me if I repeat ...)
We had a non-traditional Thanksgiving, but I have really fond memories of it. That was the day of the year that my parents baked fruitcakes for Christmas. I'm talking about fruitcakes that friends and neighbors actually liked and begged for! Some friends would get half a cake every year. My parents would mix a big batch of batter in a big roasting pan and be baking cakes all morning. The cakes would be wrapped in foil and refrigerated for a few weeks until just before Christmas, when they were given out. My parents would send me next door to the grandparents while they were baking to keep me from being underfoot. My grandparents had a color TV and would be watching the Macy's Parade. Great memories! After the parade, my grandmother would give me lunch and send me home.
So we never had a family turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, because the oven was busy with fruitcakes. We'd often have a frozen turkey breast for dinner, or even turkey TV dinners! My grandmother and aunt would fix a big Thanksgiving dinner the Sunday before at my grandparents' house: my grandparents, my parents, me and my brother, my aunt and uncle, and their son.
This is what Thanksgiving was when I was little, and I loved it.
The funny thing is, I never tasted their fruitcake. I asked once, and Mom said, “You wouldn’t like it.” So I never tried it. I have the recipe, though.I love people who have a passion! That is something! I would have guessed it was a staple of your Christmas Eve or Christmas morning menu. The funny thing is, I never tasted their fruitcake. I asked once, and Mom said, “You wouldn’t like it.” So I never tried it. I have the recipe, though.
I always found that it was either a good fruit cake or it was trash. Nothing in between. Today it would cost a small fortune to make very many. My grandma made them but they were loaded down with booze. I dont remember ever seeing one go bad either. That is something! I bet it would be a pretty pricey gift these days.
Good luck and Godspeed, my friend. Give 'em heck!Lol..I am parked right next to one of those big names and he is a bum. Always sneaking around trying to find a secret..lol..he is a great guy really but have no doubt I will dump him if its between the 2 of us..lol.
I think my parents' recipe called for a couple ounces of homemade wine in each cake---they weren't very boozy.I always found that it was either a good fruit cake or it was trash. Nothing in between.
