Brazil Floats Christmas Tree with 3 Million Lights
In Brazil they put up quite the Christmas tree every year — a floating behemoth with 3 million lights showcased by fireworks to crowds of thousands in Rio de Janeiro.
How big is this tree? The star alone is more than 35 feet high and weighs 2.5 tons. In total, the tree weighs 542 tons, towers more than 278 feet high and is supported by 18 floats on Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
This year’s theme “A Christmas of Lights”, takes visitors through the history of light, starting with the glow of the stars and culminating with Christmas lights.
The tree, which will be lit every night until Jan 6, has been officially certified by Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind in the world.
