The staple of all dip standards when it comes to year round entertain is the timeless combination of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix with sour cream. Have that and your dips will be a hit.

But what if you want an onion dip with a little zing…a little surprise shot of freshness, a dip that makes folks grab another chip and ask, “what’s in this stuff?”

The rumor about the Lipton dip is that it was devised in the 50s and proves so popular as part of holiday entertaining that more of Lipton’s product ends up on chips and not really in soup bowls. So if you’re lazy and just need a quick dip, by all means go traditional…and processed. If not, here’s the longer road to a fresher onion dip:

Merry Christmas Recipes

Ingredients —
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound onions, diced
1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1 1/2 cups sour cream
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon white pepper, freshly ground

Directions
1. Put the oil, diced onions and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a saute pan over medium heat. Cook for 20 minutes then set aside to cool.
2. Combine the cooked ingredients with all other ingredients into a bowl and mix.
3. Refrigerate for at least an hour — overnight is best for flavors to settle.

This isn’t that much more work than the old standard. But it is more than a notch above. Some have had success replacing the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. Experiment to taste.
