Rumors of Home Alone
Macaulay Culkin is back in the news of Christmas because he wants to create the next generation of Home Alone.
According to several sources, Culkin has been canoodling with Disney over the idea of Kevin McAllister’s comeback. Culkin pitched an idea where he plays single-Dad Kevin McAllister who gets locked out of his house by his disaffected son.
So Kevin, the once clever purveyor of holiday terror for the Sticky Bandits, becomes the new victim to a son he has nothing in common with except for the conviction of “this is my house, I have to defend it”.
The next-generation Home Alone idea evidently took root during the film’s 35th anniversary last year. Disney apparently is very enthusiastic about the idea.
Home Alone already has mixed reviews for their sequel chops. Home Alone 2 was a blockbuster but subsequent versions were widely seen as weak ripoffs.
Home Alone’s early 90s boxoffice clout shot the franchise to stardom during an era of great Christmas movies. There is likely still some gas left in that tank even though the kids of the early 90s are no doubt at the level where Kevin McCallister would be today – with young children of their own.
Can it work?
You have to admit there are some tantalizing possibilities for clever script writers out there.
The Sticky Bandits, would be getting out of jail right around now and as luck would have it, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are still with us.Would geriatric criminals like Harry and Marv go back to the McCallister’s? Would there be any comedic value in watching them fall down icy steps in wheelchairs?
Uh, okay, so maybe not.
Home Alone, for all the slapstick humor, tugged at heartstrings.
That was it’s super-power. When Kevin’s Mom got home and Kevin was okay and she said she was sorry – well, that affected us.
Which way will Disney take this?
Hard to say.
But if Depp’s Ebenezer is any clue a project like this would not take long to bring to theaters. That was filmed just this past winter and hits screen before Christmas 2026.
