Things are getting crazy here at the Pines!

Crisco is vegetable shortening, not lard! The cookie recipe that earned me the most compliments was from a freebie Crisco booklet.

I have two of my mom’s cookbooks from the 1950s—1960s, plus some of her recipe cards and recipes she cut from magazines, plus some commercial recipe booklets from the 1970s—1980s. I’ll never make most of them, but sometimes I just enjoy browsing through them!

Oh ok thanks. What am I thinking of then that was back in the day and it was lard?

Good morning. I’ve been up for an hour already, I’m sitting here watching the weather channel, drinking my coffee, enjoying a nice quiet morning and listening to a raccoon opening an closing the lids to all the trash cans outside, looking for some goodies!!! Now I understand why there was poo on top the lid the other week.

Morning MMC. Happy March! Can't believe that we are already in March. I hope you all are having a good week so far. Seems like March will come in like a lion because we are having a big storm tomorrow with flooding rain and maybe even snow. Let's see what happens. Hope you have a great day of hope!

Merry Thursday!
Been awake for quite some time, Rocky is still having a hard time sleeping through the night. Can’t wait until I’m allowed to start walking him. I plan on taking him for an evening walk every night to burn off some of that puppy energy. Of course I’ve been playing with him but it doesn’t seem to tire him out enough. I’m hoping everything falls in to place after that. Anyway not too much going on here, it’s just a typical day of errands and chores. Dinner will be baked chicken, cheesy scalloped potatoes and roasted brussels sprouts. That’s about it for me. I hope everyone is well and has a wonderful day!

Good Morning, Eve-of-the Eve'ers!

Indeed.
Tomorrow, we once again cycle around to Weekend Eve.
(These cycles seem to keep coming faster and faster don't they?)

The count seems to move more quickly too, as the days pass.
Behold:
Days to the Season: 257
Days to Christmas Day: 299

And there you have it.
BOTH of our counts now number in the 200's.
(I'm beginning to think things may be moving TOO fast!)

Cooler temps yesterday, with a morning sprinkle and a light evening rain.
Severe weather is a possibility today, with perhaps up to 40 mph wind gusts.
Hopefully, the worst will stay to our west. At least, that is the prediction.
We are on the far eastern edge of the warning area.
This morning has dawned overcast with a light rain, at 53 degrees, here.

Good Thursday morning, Christmas friends!

I'm finally back at work, and glad to be here. (I never thought I'd say that!) I'm turning into an old fuddy-duddy, and I don't my routine being broken, I guess.

I'm glad to be rid of the bronchitis, but now I have 30 emails to answer, and a stack of files on my desk.

Good rainy Friday Eve MMC!! What an ugly weather morning!!! I delivered groceries to moms this morning - did nothing for my hair doo!! LOL! Dena (Amish) is making a meal tonight for mom & mom #2 ~ lucky ladies!!! Lucy was a soaking wet mess when she came in this morning ~ she don't care!! She goes to the groomer at lunch - so much for brushing her out last night!

Went out to eat Mexican with my HS friends last night. It was a nice time. We don't get together too often!

Not much going on today - just work. Hoping to maybe finally finish that afghan tonight. Every time I think I'm done I decide to do "one more section/color" - but THIS last section really is it!!!

Oh gosh - I just saw our rain is supposed to mix with snow this afternoon!!! Bring on the snow!!!


And of course, the snow isn't supposed to be here until after dark when I can't see out the window! Bah humbug!

Today, I rediscovered some of my grandmothers cookbooks, that my grandfather gave to me a couple years ago and I just packed them away in a box at the time without really looking at them.

Today, I open up one of my storage boxes and there some of them were. There are original cut out recipes from magizines from the 50’s thru the 80’s. Her original cookbook, some of my great-grandmothers recipes that were passed down to my grandmother. There they are, in my grandmothers handwriting, stained recipes, old articles and flyers from like Ball blue book of home canning - 1949, woman’s day cook book - 1958, articles from a woman’s day magizine -1956, a small little advertisement saying, “send for your free complete catalogue of Columbia Pictures 8mm Home movies”.
There are recipes from Crisco, mmmm, nothing like cooking with lard. Lol....

Anyhow, I think it’s kinda neat.

How fun!! I love looking at those old cookbooks/recipes from loved ones!! ESPECIALLY in their handwriting!

Merry Wednesday!

Another gorgeous day today. Went down towards Detroit looking for store stock. Found a few things, but nothing major. It was fun, though, and the day was gorgeous. Ate at Sonic just to get one of their iced chocolate coffees ~ they are so good!

Yesterday another section of the barn fell down so only two more sides and then the fun job of cleaning up begins. What a mess!

Happy Friday Eve and March 1st!
Looks like we are in for a pretty bad rain storm starting tonight. They are saying we could get high winds..I hope we don't lose power, that is always my fear!
Tonight I am making pork chops, mashed potatoes and salad for dinner.

Crisco is a substitute for lard. It's a vegetable oil base. Lard is pig fat. Many old timers say the only good way to make a good pie crust is using good ol fashion real lard! Emma (the Amish lady who stayed with mom) was a huge fan of real lard!!

Raccoon's can be mean & destructive, but they are so cute to watch!!!
