I say "safe from rock," because Decca’s 1957 holiday slate included Bing Crosby, Fred Waring, Guy Lombardo. Judy Garland, and the Four Aces. All traditional, safe musical acts that wouldn’t make a mockery of Christmas. One rocker who made some noise in ’57 was Clyde McPhatter, and that wasn’t even a new record – Atlantic reissued “White Christmas,” which he had recorded with the Drifters in 1954, to compete with the Elvis version.
