That sounds so wonderful and glad you enjoyed it!!
A church in our area does, "The Lights of Lakeland," and the first year it was so lovely! Lights, giants trees, it was a large walk through, starting with Santa, his reindeer, elves, a toy shop, characters from The Grinch and Ruldolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Charlie Brown's Christmans, then moved phenomenal light displays. The hub was artificial snow, our version of "Rockefeller Center Tree," and their choir on risers singing carols. There was a military appreciation section showing home movies of their church members who were serving, and each of the branches of the military represented so you could go thank them for their service and make a donation that was divided among the families of those in service or who had been wounded in combat. They had fresh cookies, roasted chestnuts, cocoa and cider being served and handed out. Past all of that, and what you ended with was the walk through of the live nativity where they recreated the walk through of Bethlehem and story of each stage of Mary's conception to the birth and wise men. It was so beautiful, peaceful, uplifting and precious - the entire thing.
Over the years in their pursuit to do-it-one-better, they kept adding things, expanding to an adjacent property so they could make it bigger. The last year I went was 2011. It was awful. They practically shoved you through the nativity walk, skimped on the experience of it and made it like a huge maze you had to walk through, giving it a carnival feel. They made the whole focus on the children having characters there that had nothing to do with Christmas, its traditions or anything. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cinderella, Big Bird, etc.
I never even saw a tree, the snow was gone, the cocoa and cider vendors were no where - even the military display was gone. It was all focused on commercialism and the church made it feel like they tried to quickly usher people through the nativity story portion so as not offend those who just came to bring their kids to the light display. I was so disappointed I never went again.
I would love to find a display in my area like it again. So glad you and your family enjoyed the weekend! That's wonderful!
Hope you have a great day. :yahoo:
