Good Morning Halloween Friends! It's finally Wednesday again! The underrated day of the week. It's not Monday anymore, and later this evening some weekend vibes start rolling in. Thursday and Friday always feels so different, don't they? Today is the last day of our heatwave here that has been gripping up for the past few weeks. We've ended up getting almost an inch of rain out of the pop up storms though, so that has been really appreciated, as the storms have tamped the temperatures down as well. I never thought I would say that I am looking forward to the 80's, temperature wise, but that's where we are. The peak hottest day for this summer is still about 10 days away, and it will sure be a relief afterwards as we can watch that heat and humidity start ticking down as we head into August.
Three weeks to go now until JOL Day #6, and Fall Pre-Season begins the next day, that is very exciting and a big reason why July's JOL Day might be my "favorite" besides January. We march closer and closer to the 50 DAYS TO THE BERS milestone - Saturday is going to be lit, folks. But don't sleep on our other counts. We still have one triple digit count left, our Days to Halloween which I don't think anybody, myself included, is rushing / wishing away.
Our Wednesday Halloween fact / topic has to do with turnips! Did you know that in the early 19th and 20th centuries, carving Turnips for Halloween was more common in Irish and other Celtic nations?

We finally got some decent rain last night, something we needed badly. Still some light rain showers this morning as well, and cooler today.
I have always found the tradition of using turnips as quite interesting. I don't know that I would ever make the change though.
Right about Halloween I also teach the history of Halloween in my American history classes. I know it seems out of place, but it actually makes a lot of sense. One, many people just go through the motions of "celebrating" holidays without knowing why any of it is done. Two, about Halloween time, I have just finished a unit on the large immigration period from 1890-1910. One large group that came in at that time was the Irish. They were largely responsible for bringing Halloween to the US. My students always enjoy learning the history of Halloween. We also talk about witches and vampires and the stories and people who influenced the legends over time.

I think urban legends and folklore need to be a part of American history.
I fit that type of stuff in where I can. I try to add those stories in when they fit the larger theme or time period.
Also, in every unit I teach I always take about the Art and Music of the period. You can get so much history from understanding the art and music of a time period.

It looks like CVS is back to breaking the street date on putting out Halloween candy early! I was in there yesterday evening, and they had a small display of REESE'S PUMPKINS! Can you imagine my shock? I didn't get a picture (or a bag), but I'm going back in there today, so I'll provide photographic evidence.

I filled 119 eggs for the Great Pumpkin Egg Hunt yesterday. They are non-food treats-- stickers, rings, finger puppets, eyeballs-- bought on sale after last Halloween so the news that @The_Escalation shared about Reese's Pumpkins at CVS is making me feel justified! Halloween is Coming!
Wow. We are really starting to get close now. The 50 day Bers preview is like the beginning of the Bers pre pre season! Once the Bers are here Halloween soon follows. Hopefully time slows down some. I am in no hurry and will enjoy it all including the rest of summer/preseason Bers.
I am shocked that you left without a bag. I would probably have purchased TWO!
I could not buy one bag no mater how many times I repeated it. Actually, I have been off chocolate so I still have the ones I got for Easter.
I bet filling those eggs really vamped up the Halloween feels.
My very favorite Halloween candy ever. Those and the Reese's ghosts or bats. I could eat an entire bag, and sadly, I have on occasion.
Just seeing that makes the heart race with anticipation.
