***Official American Idol Thread***

Ok, here's my official review:

1. Kara -- she looks like Paula and acts like Simon. What's new here? I don't see her adding much, at least based on tonight. Very diva like. Little girls didn't like her either.

2. Bikini Girl -- are you freaking kidding me? That one situation pretty much sums up what AI is all about: superficial, largely sexist, a popularity contest more than a talent competition. This empty headed bimbo cleared the room of my wife and most the girls and just about killed the season before it began. For me, my son, and my eldest daughter we were united: she was completely unworthy of the attention she got.

3. The gave 27 tickets to Hollywood...and we saw, what, 8 of the winning auditions?

4. Too much attention given to "Sexual Chocolate" and the like.

5. We're a long way away from the entertaining AI commercials.

So far, we're not feeling a lot of love yet for Season #8.
 
We watch it all through the season and try to pick who's leaving each week. But it's still about the funny auditions to me.
 
I am SOOO looking forward to Bikini Girl proving that she doesn't have the chops to do this. She was so rude. This is the "image" of an American Idol???? This is what they want our kids to look up to????? Instead of helping her cause, her out fit and attitude made her look like an idiot. I really wish Kara had come over the table and smacked her. It would have be so worth it!!!

Even if they didn't totally stay away from the weirdos, it was better than previous years. I'm glad they're sticking to more of the serious folks, they deserve the 30 seconds of fame.

Bikini girl aside (who I didn't think was better than Kara, by a long shot), they had some pretty good ones.

I really liked that first gal to make it through, Emily Hughes (I only remember the name because there is a figure skater with that name), she's the tatooed one. I thought she had a great voice - I can see her in the top 10. I was also glad that young girl who started the adopt a grandparent program at a local nursing home got in, she was good. And the young boy who makes the horror films. I just hope he doesn't turn into another Sanjayah (sp?). And the vision impaired guy, he had a really good voice, I hope he goes far.

On a side note, I think this is going to do wonders for my exercising too, it's more fun to walk on the treadmill and watch American Idol than the military shows my husband is usually watching!
 
Well... well... well

I already hate the blind guy... he was more contrived than Bikini Girl (although a bit less contrived as the segments used to have us believe that Ryan Seacrest isn't gay). You know what, being blind isn't such a disadvantage in the music business if you really think about it. Look at Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Andre Bocelli... just to name a few. This dude was way calculated milking his 'put me on the show, I'm blind' card for all it was worth.

If AI really wants to see an increase in their viewership after last year's slight decline... have bikini girl wear a bikini every show. I'm just keeping it real as a man... ever since back in caveman days in the year 10,000 B.C. when Rachel Welch put on her first furry bikini... men like women in bikinis... fact!

The only good thing about the new judge is that she made me hate Paula a little less. What's her angle... she wrote some hit songs? Do I know any of them? If I do, then I certainly haven't linked her to them. Nothing for nothing, being from Jersey... you can't swing a cat without hitting a woman that looks just like this broad. And again... I love the contrived segement with the cowboy girl claiming to be her biggest fan... come on AI, give me a break.

The thing I like about the auditions is trying to guess which ugly duckling is gonna be tranformed into a swan over the season. I'd like to see the moldy closet kid go through a transformation the way Clay Aiken did... almost like David Cook did... I kept waiting for them to do something with that bad combover, but I guess they couldn't come up with any other way to keep his big 'Young Frankenstein' egghead covered.

I really liked the tattoo girl, but my fear is that she's going to fall into that bad AI trap that the judges seem to lay down for some contestants. She gets pretty far sticking to her roots with the rock stuff... then the judges tell her she needs to take some chances and step out of her element, and when she does they all chastise her for not staying true to who she is... and then it totally takes her out of her game. I think they kinda did that to the Irish girl and that roadhouse chick with the Steven Tyler pants last year if I remember correctly.

And thank goodness for high definition or I really would have swore that the crying rock and roll dude was actually Butch Walker going undercover to be on American Idol.
 
I didn't like the rocker chick with all the hardware on her face, tattoos on her arms and pink in her hair -- the one who sang Barracuda. She could belt it out, no doubt. But she did zip for me.

the one chick with big teeth and forehead...wore a black and white blouse, can't remember what she sang -- she was good. But we're a long, long way from picking any kind of favorites.

Did you know they expanded the Top 24 to 36 this year...and brought back the Wild Card?

True... but it's kinda like making your SuperBowl picks after week one... you're just kinda fired up since the season is back and underway... it will be quite a while before things start shaping up.

I did see the finalist expansion...
This season will feature for the first time 36 semifinalists with 12 different semifinalists performing every Tuesday. The male, female, and the next top vote getter with the highest number of America's votes will make it into the top 12. This season will also feature the return of the Wildcard round last used in Season 3 with the judges chosing three eliminated contestants to advance to the finals.
But with four judges, does that mean all four of them have to agree on who the 3 wildcards will be... During season 3 each judge got to choose their own wild card... the numbers won't make it work like that this year.

Any gamblers here? My bet is that Bikini Girl is gonna be Simon's wildcard. I'm calling that right now.

I'm also glad they decided to s**tcan that stupid Idol Gives Back show this year.

Yeah, she was good.
She sang an Etta James song if I remember correctly.
 
I Liked Stevie too, she's got talent...and bikini girl was not terrible but it'll be fun to watch her go down in flames in Hollywood...I did enjoy seeing Ryan squirm as she kissed him though...I liked Kara, the new judge! She's got a heck of a resume' and may add a dose of sanity when Paula wanders off into her world of "be true to who you are, that's where your money is...you're so sweet and true to yourself and being the talent that you don't have being true to yourself...Blah...Blah...Blah..."

So far I think it was a good start...I read in a trade magazine that one of the reasons you don't see everyone that goes to Hollywood during the audition process is that they may have chosen a song that is too expensive to license or not available at all...It was great to have the show back!

I said to my wife if the oil rig dude can make it to the top 12 he'll be a success, kinda like Bucky Covington and Josh Gracin... you don't have to win in order to have a semi-successful career after Idol.

I guess not...My wife gets upset when I make jokes about Ryan...I do try to give him the benefit of the doubt...Not that it would matter to me one way or the other what his initerests were...He's good at what he does for Idol! At least in my opinion...Simon, however, is the master...

I'm at work so I can't see the pictures, but TMZ is reporting that Bikini Girl and Tattoo Girl are both quite naughty.
 
I liked Stevie and the oil rig dude. I thought the blind guy was ok too. I hate the ones who argue and try to get a second, third or fourth chance to sing poorly. Those ones get on my nerves. That's why I'm glad I tivo AI so that I can fast forward through all of that crap.
