28 days! Really just about 27 days since it's the evening now. I gotta find out when "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" airs this year. I think it's traditionally the Thursday night before Halloween, but I want to be sure!

(This would be a great night to watch the movie "28 Days.")

I think for Halloween this year I will be doing what I've seen many others discuss and have a Halloween "egg hunt" at home for my kids instead of normal trick or treating. Maybe get some plastic pumpkin eggs and fill them with candy and hide them. I'm hoping this is the only year that we have to skip out on trick or treating, but at the very least it could be a fun new tradition that we adopt next year in addition to the normal trick or treating.
My black eggs arrived, I waited too long and missed out on the orange ones, and I have Ghost Marshmallows, Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows that are shaped like pumpkins, and cheese balls on my next grocery list to fill them with.

The Halloween decorations are all up and if I do say so myself, the house looks so cool. First year with a Halloween tree. First year with permanent outside lights. Hall bathroom is a murder scene complete with a strobe light and a bloody towel and hand prints (the littles here aren't little anymore so some scary is okay). And the yard zombies are back! Mr. Skeleton is sitting in the husband's recliner reading Halloween ads and petting his skeleton dog. All is well in Halloweenville).
This is our first year as well putting out true outside "Halloween" Decorations. I would always put my plastic jack-o-lantern pumpkins in our mulch beds, and a scarecrow that my mother made me, but they were more of a Fall thing than true Halloween. This year I put the Halloween lights on the bushes, put an orange light bulb on the porch light, and down in my front yard out by our rock garden I have a straw bale with jack o lanterns sitting on top, and dried corn stalks tied to stakes behind it! Might add more in the coming weeks, we will see. I like how the place looks for Halloween time!

Happy Monday, Halloween fans! I have to say I am surprised at how quiet this thread has been, even now that we are in October. But that is okay, because the quality of the posts that we do have, are always high on this site.

Last night Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets was on Syfy TV as part of their Month long "30 days of Halloween", but i believe also each year in October they also play Harry Potters all Sunday long, and also at various times through the year.

To this day, I have not seen each Harry Potter movie, despite my wife growing up on them basically. Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets came out in November of 2002, I had been graduated from high school just a few months at that point, and was enrolled in my first semester of college. I went with my girlfriend at the time to see this movie in the theater, despite knowing nothing about the characters or lore. It has been many years since I watched this movie, and I was amazed at the nostalgia that washed over me watching it. At different times of the movie, things triggered in my brain and I felt old memories and an odd sense of Deja-Vu pass through me. It's like for the time I spent in the film, my brain was back in 2002 mode. Such a strange feeling!

I think this is one important thing that needs to be mentioned when we have discussions of any Holiday, especially the 4 month "bers" at the end of the year and the run up until Christmas. Emotions, memories, and feelings of all kind, whether they are happy or sad, is part of the experience. I think that's what makes them special! Anyway, I just wanted to share with you. Have a great day!

We got the house and yard decorated for Halloween on Friday. Love this time of year.

I think as we get older, MMC will become that wonderful memory/feeling for us all. For some on here I'm sure it already has. I love coming here (MMC) to read and share. It helps bring back memories that were forgotten.

Agreed on both counts - it is awfully quiet in here, but I think with this being MMC the majority of people are locked into the Christmas Countdown thread. That being said, I think we should start a new 2021 thread as soon as this Halloween has ended, and begin counting down to next year, much like @Edge612 has the Thanksgiving countdown thread, since Halloween is indeed a big part of the seasonal/traditional Christmas routine.

And yes, compare the quality of posts here to something like r/Halloween, where people are just posting pics of stuff like a pineapple or a completely white candy corn, and I'd gladly choose MMC every single time.

BTW, 25 days left!

That is the plan, unless I am notified otherwise by MMC Staff to not post a 2021 Halloween countdown thread. I intended on posting it at 12:00AM on November 1st, 2020. I do not know specifically if that responsibility falls to a certain member / staff member, etc. My "Celebrating Jack O Lantern Day" thread will continue to be a running thread, i will not create a new one when 2021 arrives.

I noticed a lot of these "other" threads, are quieter now that Christmas Season has essentially arrived, and most time is spent on the main Christmas Countdown thread. And that makes me happy because Christmas is my favorite holiday of all. That magical stretch from right before Halloween up until December 25th is the best of all. I would guess that the threads following our other holidays will see activity pick up once Christmas has passed and we have a clean slate of upcoming countdown dates, and the core group of 24/7 countdown folks start gathering in the other holiday threads. But let's not wish it away!!! Quality over quantity is important, and that's why MMC is the best.

Ryan had been starting them on Nov 1 the last couple of years but he didn't this year. So Prancer did in January.
I think it will be just fine for you to start the 2021 Thread. I'll be there if you do.

Especially smells can trigger it during these last few months of the year. I love that we can be triggered to remember joyful things. On the negative side, this is the same phenomena that triggers PTSD which I believe is why sometimes the last few months of the year can trigger so much anxiety and depression. So just a reminder for us to be kind to ourselves and if we do have negative triggers, re focus on the positive.

Please keep the thread going. I am an October gal and find this one fun.

Thank you, @Rich! That's the plan.

But we've got 26 more days to enjoy and talk about "This" Halloween and everything that goes with it!

@LadyLynn,

We have talked about that phenomenon many times on MMC. It is always a welcome conversation. I enjoy hearing from different people about how the sights and smells may affect them. Me personally, there are times of the year when seeing the sights or smelling the smells of Fall & Christmas can be what i describe as a "happy sadness". The Japanese actually have a word for that emotion actually!

At this time of the year, seeing or smelling something makes me very happy! It is easy to deal with because we are in that part of the year that I long for. But during the bleak months, where Christmas and Fall are still "far" away, the smells or sights might make me feel sad, because I miss my holidays so much. But missing them, and feeling the few moments of sadness makes me remember why they are special. And then i get happy knowing that i've found myself feeling joy at wishing for them to come again! So it does feel a lot different in February when i see something that reminds me of Christmas, vs May or June, when my excitement meter is just about at full again because i know that the best parts are right around the corner!

Nightmare on Elm Street is on TV tonight at 7:00 PM, on the SyFy channel. We were just talking about Freddy today in the Daily Holiday Hangout! @Edge612, he's on TV tonight if you want to indulge!

Still looking forward to Harry Potter Sunday's on SyFy, though. I'm not sure why, but i get more of a Thanksgiving / Christmas vibe from watching them, than I do Halloween. They are usually on TV too as some sort of Thanksgiving marathon. At my in laws house, they watch the entire Lord of the Rings film series over Thanksgiving Day!

Are we at 24 days already? Dang...

I think this weekend it's time for my annual viewing of "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Tim Burton did so much right with this movie - it's especially the perfect film for Bers fanatics like myself. Halloween and Christmas rolled all into one!

Tonight's offerings from AMC are "The Crazies", Insidious, and Insidious Chapter 2. All outstanding and excellent horror films.

I've been taking care to record some of these that I like, as there is already a teeny, tiny, part of my brain that is looking towards 2021 and what I plan on doing with Jack O Lantern Day in 2021. I'll talk about that when it is time, but my plan is to go big. The world needs more holidays and things to look forward to with all that is going on. My mission will be to spread Jack O Lantern Day far and wide, and hope it catches on. I really think we have a good thing going here!

I don't like scary movies but I'm a big sci-fi fan. I love The Great Pumpkin and look forward to seeing it each year.

My 84-year old brother has watched every horror movie available. His favorite TV show was The Walking Dead. His wife is more of a Hallmark person.

Does anyone remember that movie Christine? That one scared the crap out of me.

Pictures of my brother and me the last time we dressed up.

As a big Stephen King fan, I like both the movie Christine and the novel! I have been into scary stuff / horror movies all of my life. I got it from my mother, who is the same way! It is a heck of an interest, considering how much time I devote to 24/7 Christmas.

I liked his novel, Cell and The Shining. I do better with books than films.
